Worcester Royals players, current and past, are all ready for Saturday’s annual charity exhibition game in aid of CLIC Sargent, a charity supporting children and young adults affected by cancer.

The match will take place on March 19th, at 5pm, on the University of Worcester St John’s Campus 3G Pitch. The game will see the current 2015/16 Royals squad face off against ex Royals players who form the Worcester Royals Alumni Team.

This is the first of a number of events the club has in mind for this season and in future, with the entire squad and coaching staff fully behind the fundraising efforts. After raising over £100 already for CLIC Sargent, the Royals only expect that figure to rise as they hope to bring in more sponsorship from the wider Worcester community.

“It’s absolutely fantastic that the Worcester Royals are Supporting CLIC Sargent with this exciting and original fundraising idea.” Said Lydia Buckmaster, CLIC Sargent fundraising manager for Worcestershire.

“Last year CLIC Sargent services supported over 500 children and young people and their families in the west midlands, with 52 of these in Worcestershire alone.

A huge thank you to everyone involved.”

The Royals chose to support CLIC Sargent due to a connection the club shares with the charity. In 2014 second year player and club secretary, James Brennan, from Coleshill, Birmingham, was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and it was CLIC Sargent who supported James throughout his battle with the disease.

“CLIC Sargent were one of the first groups to contact me after my diagnosis.” Said James Brennan.

They provided me with a grant which helped me with the travelling home from University to attend treatment sessions.”

After an inspiring cancer fight, not letting it get in the way of his University studies and his love of American Football, James made a strong recovery and has just completed a third full season with the Royals. He has been very thankful of the support CLIC Sargent provided him during his time of need, highlighting the social support as very useful.

“I was given a support worker who I talked with regularly throughout the process.” James said.

“He was very good at outlining what other support was out there, both emotionally and with other things like my studies.”

The action will get underway at 5pm on Saturday, March 19th, on the University of Worcester St John’s Campus.
