Three members of the Worcester Royals have received academic scholarships from the University of Worcester for the hard work and attention paid to their studies.

The three second year players, offensive lineman Rahim Bas, running back Mike Harris and defensive back Daniel Laight, were awarded grants from the University of Worcester at the end of October.

Defensive back Daniel Laight was very happy with the receiving the accolade. “I got this scholarship for achieving 3 A’s and a B in my first year of studying” said Daniel, the now second year Business, Finance and Accounting student.

“I was ecstatic when I found out. I targeted gaining the scholarship at the start of my first year so was very happy my hard work paid off.”

Daniel also feels that receiving the scholarship will help him get the desired work placements during his final year of study.

With three members of the Royals squad receiving rewards for the dedication they’ve shown to their academic studies only highlights the ethos that the club surrounds itself, with regards to its players academic studies.

Laight and Harris were both elected to hold positions on the club’s committee last for this season, whilst Bas has implemented himself as a dominant and senior figure in the Royal’s side.

They will all be hoping that their off field successes resonate into successful performances on the field when the Royals open their 2015/16 BUCS account away to Staffordshire Stallions on Sunday.

“I definitely believe I can achieve similar successes with the Royals this season.” Said Daniel. “We have an awesome bunch of lads and I think we can achieve some good results.”

“Gaining the scholarship was all about having a good attitude to work hard, so if I can translate that attitude to the Royals it should be a good season.”

Kick off for the weekend’s matchup is at 1pm, Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Centre, Leek Road, Stoke, ST4 2DF.

If you’re unable to make it to the game and you want to keep up with the events as they unfold then tune into the Royals social media channels for game updates as and when they happen.
